Ordinarily, when Lan Clan is called in to handle a problem, it's because said situation became so out of hand, the locals need outside help to deal with whatever has beset them. Although most of the information they've been given is based on rumors, Lan Sizhui takes immediate action and decides, with his fathers busy and uncle otherwise indisposed, he'll address the issue directly; a ‘fiend’ of some sort causing inconveniences among the people, he's been told, yet nobody who has come forward possesses actual details of said ‘crimson demon’.
This will prove far more difficult than other missions he's accepted, but certainly not for the usual reasons that night-hunts are arduous.
Sizhui's arrival is mostly kept secretive (to the point he's exchanged his all-white outfit for plain, common-looking robes), this way he can work and there's less chance that the creature will catch on to the fact it's being hunted, even if Sizhui's still got his doubts about the whole thing. That isn't his place, however, so he tamps down any uncertainty then begins his project.
It takes three whole days for him to finally come up with something; the location of the demon's lair. Goodness, what more could he ask for at that point? Being handed this golden opportunity, it almost seems too good to be true, but it's the best lead he's had since he got here. (Therein lies a new problem though: how does he get there without anyone noticing?) He could, of course, cobble together an invisibility array, something that'd cover him just long enough to sneak up and catch the monster off-guard—
No, he thinks, there could be another way, right? A few long moments of contemplation and some minutes later, he's set out on horseback, galloping the two or so miles outside of town toward where the woman had marked on his map. ‘Careful you don't fall victim to trickery, young man.’ She'd warned, leaving him clutching his evidence like a lifeline, impulsiveness irresistible, despite the ominous words.
Which isn't at all what he's thinking about the moment he rides up to the house, eyes widened in surprise, but it's instantly cut short by rising anxiety. Don't be fooled, Sizhui reminds, taking a slow, deliberate breath that he exhales in a huff, hoping he's steeled himself enough to face whatever (or whoever) awaits him just beyond a quick stride across the yard and a door.
He draws ever closer, fingers clenched around his sword's sheath, the opposite hand at his side twitching nervously, completely prepared to draw his weapon if the need arises. Once he's only an odd amount of feet away, the cultivator stops, squares his shoulders and calls out, “Is anyone there? If so, present yourself.”
[wait, his being a man is concerning? that's gonna need some elaborating, sir matrim!
well, for whatever it's worth, he's about to find out what sizhui can do firsthand, even if it is something as simple as singing for now.]You do make a good point, it never hurts to just have fun.
Alright, I'll do it! Where would I be able to find you?[hopefully not caught up in another fight.]
Another day. Another month. Another year. Another century. Another who knows what. Koro tires of his work in hell. Tires of the screaming and suffering he's forced to hear, the pain he's made to cause. His wanderlust grows once again, and he leaves his duty. To smell the sweet smells of earth, to hear the sweet song of the wind, and the birds.
To taste the sweet flesh of adorable humans.
A portal opens in the earth, and the grotesque abomination crawls out from the abyss, disturbing the creatures nearby. For now, he is monstrous, his first step being to observe the environment and humans therein, so he may best take on their form. Well, he will always choose a certain form, but clothes matter, too!
It appears he is now in a forest. A beautiful place with bright and green scenery and clean air. Much lovelier than the stuffy, revolting place he calls home. He takes care to not be noticed, hiding when animals are near so he does not trigger their flight or fight with his demonic aura. All seems to be going well...until his gargantuan height disturbs the nest of a brooding waxwing, who proceeds to let her annoyance be known as she screeches and pecks at the monster that dares to startle her. The nest and eggs are fortunately fine, and Koro takes care to step away from it so he then may freely swat at the bird and move on his way. Alas, the focus on the accursed bird is his folly as his foot presses against what feels like a rope.
It's all a blur. Koro remembers the sound of something triggering, being swept into something, and then trapped.
Trapped. And danger. He feels like his power is being drained. When he comes to his senses, he finds himself encased in a net hanging on a tree. Talismans adorn the net, and it appears these talismans contained some sort of power.
Completely taken by surprise, he lets out a roar in confusion.
[whenever sizhui first heard about the ‘calamity’ that had beset a nearby village, he didn't quite believe the rumors at first; surely they were tall tales and whatever it was is something that could be easily handled if time had been put into doing so. unfortunately, hanguang-jun had been attending to other things and with zewu-jun otherwise indisposed, that meant it was up to lan sizhui to do something to help the people that had come calling for their help.
he arrives at the inn early, before anyone else besides the innkeeper has awoken, finds his room and unpacks his things, taking inventory of everything while also going over the information he'd been given moments ago. again, sizhui doesn't think much of it at first, mostly because it seems like said fiend hasn't caused nearly as much trouble as other creatures have in the past.
this, however, means nothing in the grand scheme of things. it could mean the creature is waiting, biding its time, waiting for the right moment to strike and really cause damage rather than do a bunch of petty little things.
if that's the case, he'll have to make sure he's plenty prepared, warning signals to call for help included, which he's thankfully got plenty of for once. (whenever jingyi packs, they always seem to run out . . . ) there must be something to that, but it's not something he focuses on for long. no, he pours most of his focus into going out into the village and talking to people who are meandering about, setting up stalls for selling things or preparing to head out to go fishing. like before, he's told the same thing: a calamity has befallen them and terrible things have been happening, except when sizhui asks for specifics, he doesn't get even half as much info as he'd gotten from the innkeeper.
eventually, he does come across an elderly fellow who offers him some loquats alongside more solid information; something has been terrorizing people at night-time, which sounds about right for a night-hunting trip, but it's what someone saw fighting with the demon that has people up in arms, and that's where sizhui's come back around to the thing everyone keeps calling a calamity.
he thanks the man for everything, heads back to his room and waits it out until nightfall when lan jingyi and a couple of other disciples join him. once they're all together and set up, he leads them out into the village as prepared as they can be, ready to face whatever it is head-on.]
